What kernel are you running?

What is the induiry ID returned by the drive during the boot sequence
(see your /var/messages file)?

Are you using the ide-tape drivers, or the ide-scsi SCSI emulation
drivers?

Have you tried retensioning the tape (mt -f /dev/ht0 reten)?

We have 2 of these internal drives, 1 parallel port and even one of the
5GB drives and see no problems with any of them.
