This part is ok. The card seems to be recognized at bootup.

I am looking at an out-of-the box RH 5.2, and there is no MCONFIG. I 
know I can create one from the archive, but believe that, that's where 
I messed up ,y previous attemps.

Linuxconf tells me to edit the makefile in /drivers/char/ftape. I would 
have no problem editing the file, but can't figure out what the line(s) 
should be. :(
