One question: You're using ftape from Claus' HP? If you're
uncompressing ftape-4.03-pre-2.tar.gz or ftape-4.x-1998_12_18, you'll
find these files in
        /installation/path/ftape-4.03-pre-2/MCONFIG
        /installation/path/ftape-4.03-pre-2/modules/insert
        /installation/path/ftape-4.03-pre-2/scripts/MAKEDEV.ftape

In the documentation it's said that you should compile your kernel
_wihout any support_ for tapes. So don't use RH's MCONFIG version.

Hope you can get along with this now.

Bye

Carsten
