Hi Mike, It looks like this is your parallel port set up, particularly the mode it is set up to work in - SPP. I am not an expert, but everything failed before I specified in my BIOS the address (which seems to be OK), the IRQ (7, BTW, which one are you using? It has to be 7, as far as I know) AND the mode - EPP. It may not make sense, but this worked. Also, in the general setup of the kernel config (I use xconfig) right after the parport option comes "PC style hardware" and this is enabled as module, but probably this is also OK. I suggest you play around with the LPT1 of your computer. Good luck, Matey.
