I have been having serious problems trying to get a USB 2.0 host controller working with a external USB IDE enclosure under Linux.Short version of the story: don't report such bugs against current
2.4 kernels unless you reproduce them with the patch Greg resubmitted
yesterday to Marcelo for 2.4.20 ... sounded like Marcelo would merge
it this time.
If your problem appears in 2.5.latest, or 2.4.20 with that patch, that'd
seem to be a new problem, not yet reported by anyone. But a lot of your
symptoms sound exactly like ones that have been fixed by that patch.
