Commented Epson out of the dll.conf file and plustek found it, but then reported the same error. I have now given up with the Epson and returned it to the store and got a Agfa Snapscan in its place. It worked first time out the box. All my problems are now over, but in future I will not be buying another Epson scanner whatever other people say.
