Thanks. Checked that out and tried all they suggest, but all the doc (and
the code) say that the driver is for the parallel port version, not the
USB. Compiled it anyway and tried, but got the same error message.

It did thanks. It proved to me that there was no way I was going to get
the Epson working so it has gone back to the store and been traded for a
snapscan that worked the moment I plugged the USB cable in. It is not as
good quality, but it will do for now.
I will be upgrading from the snapscan in a few months, but not to an
Epson.
