For the archive:

it seems that many other USB2 adapter have the same PCI IDs, maybe
from a NEC chipset or so.
The trick would be to enable kernel 2.4's pcmcia modules and to re-compile
pcmcia-cs (if used) so that it doesn't override kernel's ones in userland.
