Open Source is great, there's nothing more important. But when a company like Phillips only allows a 50/50 compromise, you've got to go with it. Preventing the PWC developer from hooking to a binary module could cause a large blow to adopting Linux on the desktop.
How can Distro-producers market Linux to consumers who want to do video conferencing if they can't support the most common webcams on the market?
How am I supposed to keep Linux in use at my computer vision company when we rely on these webcams for data capture and testing, and now we can't use them? Its a hard enough battle proving Linux's strong points to the administrators, now I have to counter a major, self inflicted downside.
Brilliant strategy for furthering Linux's goals.
This is taking ideology too far, what's next, banning commercial software and binary only programs from user-space too?
