RH9 is somewhat old. Twice replace with newer releases (FC1 and, as of this week, FC2). But that said, I'm posting from a RH9 machine right now... Sounds like you've logged in under Gnome. That's when you get the System Settings option. It should first pop up a password box (as you need root access to reconfigure the screen). Then you should get an applet that's very much like to Windows "Display" thingy where you can set the type of card and type of monitor, and then configure to a resolution that both support...
