I concur, It is quite obvious from the log file that X will not go
higher resolution because of the low horizontal sync specified for the
monitor..

Now Don, don't take this the wrong way, but you seem to have a problem
finding stuff for yourself, so heres how I found the answer. 
Search on google for "linux laptops". About the first result will be the
"Linux on Laptops" site.

Click Sony, then there is one report for your model number. Click on it
and there is a file you can download for XFree4. Looking at it you will
see that there is a HorizSync figure considerably higher than you
allowed.

The second site on that google search (Tuxmobil) also has info on
individual models.
