I find the best way to test pop3 is to use telnet:

   telnet pop3.xtra.co.nz 110
   user xxxx
   pass yyyy
   list
   quit

If it fails, where is the failure?  The telnet to port 110?  Authentication?

Now you should have a better idea of where your problem is.
