Maybe there is a better (and probably cheaper) way of getting the word
out than advertising in the press. Hands up who takes any notice of
the small adds in the Press.

I know we are not in this for the money, but there must be better uses
for this money than donating it to the Press.

I agree 100% with what David says.

But rethink the sticker idea. If you give away a distribution give away a sticker with it... or even a b/w flyer would do.

Oh and if meetings are not paying their way, we need to make them do so by
one or more of the following:

1. increase attendance, which at approx 25 of per month is pathetic. Where are you linux supporters? What would get you to a meeting? Frankly I can't be bothered much with preparing talks for a minimal audience, it is not
inspiring. And so it becomes a downward spiral.

2. reduce costs. I know Aucklug has the free use of premises and equipment
from a linux company. No cost. Maybe we need to reassess costs if we
cannot do (1). Do we need to buy bickies? I thought we were taking
donations for bickies - ie people can buy a packet of bickies and put them
in the pot.

3. Increase charges and/or collect it ALL. Hands up anyone who has paid $2 each and every time. I can't (I try to make it up next time, but hey it
doesn't always happen).

4. Get sponsorship.

For point one, I really believe there has to more advertising done by
clug to let people know you guys exist. I know a bunch of people who
use linux who only know of the existence of clug through me. Even
something a simple as a flyer advertising the email list and meetings
going out to the library notice boards, tertiary institutions, etc
could be a reasonably inexpensive way to start.

Point two, how much does the St Albans room cost?
$25.00

and does it have any
facilities that are needed that can't be found at a cheaper venue?
The 2 facilities in which I was interested when they were offered by
St. Albans are a reasonably high speed Internet connection, a decent
kitchen & dishwasher. ( The dishwasher has packed a sad. Hopefully
it's going to be fixed )

Point three, Well I've paid everytime but then I've only been able to
make it to one meeting as I have another meeting every second tuesday
that tends to conflict with the clug meetings.

I have been able to arrange alternating Tuesdays and Thursdays for next year.

The most important thing is, that you have a fixed location. You don't need someone to hold a speech or prepare something... i mean it is nice to have, but the get together is more important. If you think about advertisement, you first have to let the people know that there is a Linux User Group and that there is a meeting on a _regular_ base. Add a few things we can help with and voila: we have a flyer. Stick it to blackboard or place it in friendly shops. And tell me how you'll explain an alternating Tuesday/Thursday...
A fixed meeting is half the rent...

If there are SFD Flyer, why not put our key information on the paper? Contact www/email/phone meeting dates/places...

See you on the next CLUG. When and where?

Raffael
