I found the T40 I had to be somewhat fragile.
The lid cracked near the hinge on the  LH side.
The lid of the PCMCIA slot fell off.

I'd recommend buying from a retailer because you get a guarantee.
Computer Future / Computer Broker, cnr Gasson St. and Washington Way,
replaced the T41 with which I replaced the above T40 no questions asked
on the last day of the three month guarantee period. I was impressed.

ThinkPads generally run Linux pretty well.
Try to avoid one with an ATI video system.
Intel video is available on some thinkpads.

Insist on seeing it boot either a SystemRescueCD or Knoppix
before parting with your hard won cash if buying privately.
