I read somewhere that a normal printshop in China has available about
7000 / 8000 characters.  My Xiandai Hanyu Cidian contains about 14000
characters (and 70000 / 80000 composite words).

Clearly, Unicode must cover more than what is needed for everyday
communications in modern Chinese.
