US Robotics makes some modems that are hardware modems, and some that 
are not. You can probably determine whether your model is Linux-friendly 
by googling, or checking on eBay, to see what people selling it say 
about it's Linux compatibility.

I know for a fact that the v.Everything version works with Linux, 
because I used it for many years, until I upgraded to DSL.

If you are using the KDE desktop environment, typing

kppp

...and pressing 'Enter' at a shell prompt, will bring up the kppp 
dialer. You will have to enter your ISP info, phone number, etc., into 
the appropriate boxes.

Linux has other dialers as well, depending on distro and desktop 
environment. For most ISP's they are fairly easy to configure.
