OK all I wanted is to be able to just try it out and if all works then I will 
full install just wanted to try it pout first

  I had to respond to this because the post was just wrong. When you
  use a live CD of any Linux Distro (or freeDOS or whatever), it does
  not use the computer's Hard Drive. It uses the CD drive plus the RAM.
  The RAM gets erased during any power down or effectively erased
  during any reboot.

  To your original question. The live CD for Ubuntu should allow you
  access to set up Samba. This will work for the current session only.
  Once you reboot the computer, these settings will be gone. Since you
  are running a live CD, nothing gets written to the hard drive until
  you install Ubuntu for real.

  anything more. Why get Samba if you are not loading the bistro?
