Linux can usually either wipe out and use the entire hard drive, or, if you have unallocated space, it can preserve the existing OS, and set up a dual-boot menu. In either case, Linux will do the formatting, as necessary. If I were you, I would postpone the installation until I answered some questions... You mention that the computer is 'older'. Check the specs, and make sure that whichever Linux distro you choose, it will work with the computer resources you have. Which distro is 'best'... for you. You will have to decide that. check: http://distrowatch.com/ Last... decide which applications (like samba, apache, etc., etc.,) you are going to want to install, and plan your installation so that you get everything you want installed at once, with the operating system. Most distros have several CD's full of goodies, but most of the stuff, you will not want to install, because apps that you do not use just fill up the hard drives unnecessarily. The names of the apps will probably be unfamiliar to you, coming as you do from Windows. This is a good time to do some reading, and get the lay of the land before you make the 'big jump'.
