: Actually, the setup cost me very little in cash.
:
: I do some building and repairing for a short list of computing
clients,
: and am often told to 'just get rid of' the computer that is being
: replaced by the computer I built, and am installing.
:
: I also pick up a lot of spare parts at garage sales, and on
: CraigsList... local Chicago people selling good stuff for cheap.
:
: The current evolution of the LAN is about number 4, with a lot of
: improvements being made along the way.
:
: The one thing I did buy new and shiny is that WaveMaster case,
built by
: Cooler Master... it was just a beautiful thing, that I had to
have.<g>

I have come across much of my stuff in simalar ways. Even though it
is outdated. I will fix a friends computer or upgrade for someone,
and they have no use for the old parts so I get them. And also there
is a yahoo group called freecycle, and I get some things from there
whenever someone offers. I have about 3 pentium II's out in my shed
I can't seem to make myself get rid of. One day I am going to see if
I can network them together with linux just to practice and learn.
You know, "tinker"
I have toyed with the idea of starting a non profit organazation
that business or individuals can donate their old equipment to, then
refurbish it, put Ubuntu on there, and redistribute to people like
kids or the elderly who need them. BUT, there are too many
variables, like how do you decide who gets what, etc.
It was a good thought though, I love to build and tinker and that
way I could do what I love and help the community. In this day of
technology, no child should be left behind.
