Hi Joe, I have only been working with Linux for a few months. I started with Ubuntu 8.04, tried out Mepis 7 but couldn't get Wine to work on it (I needed to be able to run Macromedia Dreamweaver on Linux in order to drop Windows) and I have now ended up using Linux Mint. Mint is based on Ubuntu and follows the same release structure. I find that it has all the advantages of Ubuntu but with the added extra of having more restricted codecs etc. built in. It's all a very personal thing, I think, but I suggest you give Mint a try from the live CD - I think you'll be very pleasantly surprised at how much support it gives "out of the box".
