The reference should be towards M$'s policy of embracing and extending
standards in the process making their extended applications unable to
interoperate with existing accurate implementations of the standard.
The most recent example being M$'s kerberos implementation.
Linux manages to interoperate with most stuff under the sun quite well.
A differing /etc/rc.d would not render your server daemon unsable it
would just be called differently.
The issue of many distributions, many GUIs, fragmentation, hampering
growth has always cropped up. Linux seems to grow anyway. I guess it's
more choices and more freedom (and more fun).
