<i am running 5 linux boxes with kernel 2.2 for i686.
<i have amd k6-2 400 cpu motherboard
Shailesh, could you double-check this pls? Are you sure you are running the i686
version of 2.2 on your AMD K62 boxes? Or is it i586?

<replace with what?? there is
<i386, i586, i686 (AFAIR) kernels..
AFAIK, the AMD K6-2 belongs to the 5th generation of CPUs, not the 6th gen--which is
what the i686 kernel is meant for. So I should have replaced the i686 with either i386
(generic kernel for x86) or i586 (customised kernel for 5th gen x86 chips).

<> Anyone ever encountered this prob before?
<no... all i can say is look for the problem elsewhere.

Have already checked all the other components (except m-board and CPU that is)--and
everything's fine. It's got to be the board and/or the CPU.

The PC Quest edition which carried the RH6.2 had a warning--that you might end up with
a 'brain-dead system' if you choose the wrong kernel, but it slipped my mind. Never
thought it could happen. Guess that's the price you pay for being a pioneer :)
