It lies most likely in your display card. Also check RAM. Some of it may
have blown due to static[0].

Define 'no display'.

Only enough information to diagnose the real problem. As many have stated,
it probably has nothing to do with kernel. Using a 686 kernel on a 586
shouldn't (probably) cause anything except a kernel panic or inability to
boot the kernel.
