is suse like fedoara where runlevel 3 turns off the display manager? if so, you'd be turning off Xwindows before suspending and it might be unloading the nvidia driver from the kernel but I doubt that. Based on what you have said, it would seem that the nvdia module is not causing the problem unless X is running.
