Thanks.  I've discovered now that I can make the mouse work by disabling
*both* the eraser and and the cursor.  If I only disable one of them,
the mouse doesn't work.  So, I have to sacrifice the use of the eraser
for the mouse..  Certainly sounds like a bug to me =(
