Not really. CSharp is one of many languages that run within the context of
Microsoft's new Common Language Runtime, which provides developers with a
common set of libraries and classes, if you will, to develop cross-language
solutions. It is much like Java in the sense that the CLR is a "virtual
machine" that will ideally be cross-platform. (Ximian, the developers of
Gnome, are currently working on the .NET CLR for Linux, and I believe *BSD)
The concept of a virtual machine isn't unique to Java; they merely have been
very successful with the concept. So using a "VM" isn't a "shameless
ripoff"; it's a solid distributed computing principle. Also, for those who
feel that C# "steals" "Java-style" syntax, look at C code from 20 years ago
(before the Web, before Java).
True, the Java issue has little to do with what server-side language you are
using. However, if you've ever used any of the CFForm GUI widgets, like
CFTree, or CFGrid, you will be impacted. These widgets rely upon Java
applets, which will not be included in Windows XP.
I disagree that Microsoft is doing this "to rip off Java". They're doing it
because of the agreement they reached with Sun concerning their use of Java.
The idea was that Microsoft had to ensure that they were including a version
of Java that met the terms of Sun's license; however, Microsoft is under no
obligation to integrate any third-party technology in any of their products.
Yet another reason why you should develop applications with absolutely NO
assumptions: never assume that a client-side technology will be present.
