Well firstly I dispute that, every model series from MSV on down to
MG/HGUC has been a minor transition from the precedent model series.
The only 2 not-so-minor transition points were (1) system injection on
the first HG line, which was aborted very quickly, and (2) MG was a
small quantum leap from the previous kits in any scale.

But let's not drag out this difference, let's pretend for now I agree
with this point about a transitional period. How come 0083 was
singularly weak in merchandise compared to other series in that era,
e.g. well take examples according to you, CCA and 0080 were the first
snap kits, 0083 came out AFTER both CCA and 0080. Actually all other
series that came out immediately before or after 0083 didn't suffer
from this transition period effect.

As far as series model count:
...

Well let's not get into the other series for now, let's just agree
that 0083 initial model line was pretty much unique. The only
comparison would be to Turn-A, a full ~50 episodes (compared to 0083's
13) that produced only ~8 kits (2 recolors).

The main reason that the original 0083 line of kits failed was because
Bandai, and everyone else, expected F91 to be such a big hit that it would
overshadow 0083 by a long shot. As a result they didn't even attempt to put
any effort into making decent kits for the 0083 line and had all of their
top designers focusing on F91 kits. While I like the GP-04, the GP-01 and
GP03 kits were mediocre at best and the GP-02 was pure unadulterated crap.
IMO by the time 0083 was recognized as a success, they didn't bother to add
to the line because it was already seen as inferior. The amount of HGUC
kits released for this series would tend to back up my theory as to the
merchandise-ability of the series. In fact they created a whole new line
just to release the mobile armors from the series.

This is actually kind of the discussion I wanted to have... How come
the original 0083 line was so short (and bad) and how did it come back
to life and even set at least one record (most expensive gunpla ever)?

I wonder if it should be credited to the popularity of 0083 in the US...
