Our school bought the lightning thief for every 8th grader and we read it as an enitre grade in advisory class after the state test was over. They LOVED it...it wasn't everyone's favorite book by any means, but just the fact that the entire eighth grade was reading it at literally the same time and they were able to keep the books make them want to read and take care of the books.
The program was called one book one grade. We will eventually move to one book one school.
