Our problem right now is the sheer number of students coming to us with a
reading level several grades below their grade level - and they aren't special
ed. We don't have a reading specialist, and we only have one reading class. We
have tutoring before state assessments, but it's more like a bandaid on a
bleeding artery. We've assigned adult mentors and high school mentors, but that
isn't helping.

I want to know if anyone is using Read 180, which is the latest program our
district is considering for our middle schoolers who aren't on grade level. Our
students' families, and therefore our students, have very low vocabulary and
often don't see a need for reading.

Thanks -
Carrie L.

Subject: Re: [LIT] Remedial Reading

When I taught "regular" reading I used reading workshop and it did work
wonderfully. With my remedial readers I use class novels that really grab them
and
I do the read aloud, then we discuss. I've noticed a major difference in the
kids being able to make inferences and be able to get deeper into the book.
