My four 7th grade classes just finished Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis. Many of them read this book in elementary school. We were able to go deeper into topics such as the Great Depression, jazz, and family issues due to their age. Many of these student had fought reading in the past but then really got lost in this book. He uses figurative language very well and includes all of the senses. One of my classes is an inclusion class with 32 students (8 special ed students) and a second teacher--special ed. They really loved it.

My honors class read in small lit circles No Small Thing, Princess Academy, Milkweed, Flipped, Peak, and Assassin. No Small Thing and Milkweed were the favorites.

Subject: Re: [LIT] Remedial Reading

Our literacy team is beginning a book talk in a few weeks. We've a
few in mind. The team is interested in classrooom reading
structures. Reading Workshop. It's going to be quite a change for
several teachers who are moving away from the one book fits all and
are ready to learn how to structure their classes providing a
differentiation model.

Could you name a book which helped you most in creating a reading
classroom offering success to your readers. Our classrooms are
heterogenous in their makeup. A few of our readers are in the special
ed classroom for reading instruction and I believe they should be part
of the peer group during reading.

Any titles in mind?

Jacquie
