Was looking at having the marginal Autohelm 4000 wheel pilot repaired when we got our boat. They don't service them anymore. Our unit was about 19 or so years old and we were told to get a new one that this is an antique.
We're now in the process of getting a Northstar AP380 with an oversized hydraulic ram (the A5). We know of a boat like ours (and also overloaded) that has one and has been cruising for several years without any problems. It's below decks and out of the way so we can get the old one off the wheel. BTW, we've also heard the Raymarine autopilots in a cruising situation with long term open ocean stresses are one of the most repaired units and the linear drive unit (not hydraulic) is the most repaired Raymarine unit. That is long term cruising and not coastal use. Coastal use, they seem to work very well. At least that was the experience of a marine electronics technician with about 20 years experience that we know.
