Re: [Liveaboard] help with computer recovery (lengthy)Noel, I built my first computer from scratch using an 8080 chip set I bought from Intel in the 70's, programmed it in machine language (octal) - yes, I'm a dino. Did a lot of embedded computer designs (google knopf+fnal or knopf+fermilab) and you will see that I am quite computer literate. I have no automatic updates enabled on any of my computers, but the general public will have that enabled when they buy a computer at Walmart or Bestbuy. While away from IL for months I will set my wife's omputer for automatic updates since she doesn't have my infatuation with technology.
The problem was with HP/Compaq using an Intel driver for both Intel and AMD CPU's. BTW, on this list we prefer text only.... no HTML since some people use sattelite service that charges by the kbyte. I tend to delete all formatted messages since this is the preferred way to deliver viruses and such via script - ahhh, those immature script kiddies. No Norton or Macafee allowed on any of my computers, I like them lean and mean. If in doubt, install WireShark and monitor your net traffic (you need to brush up on the tcp/ip protocol as I had to) Walter Walter, Live update does not "push" updates on you unless you allow it too. Just change the settings in the security panel to notify me when there are updates. Also, they publish articles detailing the changes etc so you can see if you want to apply them. If what i remember you said happened, it was a dell machine, and an update issue with a dell setup. Mine went fine. Though I did not notice a major increase in speed either. The thing is to check with dell about any issues with the service packs in particular and to always have a backup. A daily rotating backup works the best, but a monthly is good too. Noel N.Y.
