Ben, like me, probably was required to read it in high school. I would not hesitate quoting from Animal Farm without further explanation. I guess I'm guilty of believing the educational system is as good today as it was in the 1950's but maybe not. Animal Farm is a parody of the communist governments of his day, specifically Stalin's rein.
The reference is to the fact communism is supposed to be everyone is equal, however government officials in all of the communistic countries appear to have a much better life style than the peons. The reference is commonly used to criticize unfair treatment at the hands of the government.
