Marce:

First, I want to thank you and Sam for nudging the group back to a
discussion of boats.

Second, was also have a PDQ 36. There are lots of advantages to cats, but a
couple of them that stand out for us are the stability, the shoal draft and
the fact that you typically have two of the important things like engines,
anchors, windlasses, hulls and watertight compartments. We spent a winter
in the Bahamas where the water is beautiful but very skinny in most places.
In anchorages that were crowded with monohulls, we could always find a spot
right up next to the beach. In the ICW, when we buddy boated with
monohulls, they always seemed to be limited by their drafts. Since we draw
something less than 3', we hardly ever had a problem. We managed to lose a
prop on one of the engines and were able to easily beach our boat at George
Town in order to replace it. Try that on a mono.

With two engines, maneuverability is amazing. When waiting for a bridge to
open, we just sit and spin in place without worrying about hitting fixed
objects or other boats who are also waiting. It's sort of like a poor man's
bow thrusters.

We get nearly the same speed from two engines as we do from one and often
only use the one. If one engine dies, there is a lot of comfort in knowing
that the other one is ready to go. The ability to swap parts from one
engine to another is another benefit. It's like having a complete set of
spares on all of your engine parts.

If your husband really, really likes to heel, likes the "feel" of sailing a
monohull and doesn't intend to venture into shallow water, you will probably
not be able to convert him, but I hope you can get him to try a cat. If he
does, I think he will also be hooked.

Best wishes,

Phil
