From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of ahmet erkan SNIP: . Whether using an isolation transformer or not the docked boat ought to meet the safety requirements by having the shore cable ground conductor connected to the boat ground. (ie: Engine block and the negative terminal of the 12Vdc system) . Installing an isolation transformer and then connecting the Shore ground to Boat Ground just defeats the purpose of an isolation transformer. So, no don't do it. One of the purposes of an isolation transformer is it allows you to re-establish a local natural/safety ground bonding point at the boat its self - independent of the docks bonding point. And this is independent of the 110v Safety Ground to 12v Ground connection (e.g. engine block) that is always recommended. Lacking an isolation transformer - using a Zinc Saver, or Galvanic isolator, provides in effect a 'speed bump' of 1.2v (approx) that is needs to be exceeded before current is transferred to/from the boat over the safety ground wire. This allows a small margin for small leakages, ala galvanic sourced voltages, while still providing a good solid bond for safety issues. -al-
