You might want to consider adding the -l option to mkisofs. This allows
for longer filename which allows full 31 character filenames.
Otherwise the following shows yoL

mkisofs: New session will use name 'BZIP2_1_.PAT;1'
Even without -l options I've not actually seen the 8.3 truncated
filenames. I'm guessing there's a table kept somewhere with the full
names for systems who understand it. Just thought I'd bring it up in
case it's something to look into.
