Update: I tried your press Esc suggestion. Which did indeed get rid of the splash screen and show me a list of Removed, Stopped, Closed, Stopping, Unmounting stuff.
However, I don't know enough to decipher the data. And now it seems I am frozen there instead of on the poweroff splash screen. After another long press on the power button, startup and poweroff, I am now again frozen on the poweroff splash screen, and leaving it there for an hour or so, to confirm it doesn't fully poweroff after a lag.
