Hello Peter here, welcome to Tuesday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day is going
well and I hope you’ll be able to join me tonight, BBC1 at 6.30. I’ll have all
the day’s news. We’ll be reporting on the villagers in Winterton near
Scunthorpe who are taking the fight against crime into their own hands. They’ve
bought their own CCTV cameras. We’ll have pictures of the demolition of one of
Hull’s ugliest buildings. Can you guess which one? And we’ll meet the local man
preparing for the World Memory Championships. He can memorise a pack of cards
in THREE minutes! I have trouble remembering my ‘phone number! And of course
Paul will have the forecast. Just a reminder that for the next four weeks
through the summer, we’ve got an extra Look North. It’s just after the new One
Show at 7.25pm. That’s the day’s news, a round-up of the local stories and
Peter and Paul. That will be at 7.25pm tonight on BBC1.

Emails

Thanks for the emails on a variety of subjects. Let’s just look at some of them
which have come in since our last Levy Letter. This one from Abby “I was just
reading my Levy Letter and the second political correctness item caught my eye.
If they’re worried about allegations of abuse, how about the fact that leaving
the kids without sun cream could also be classed as abuse, letting kids getting
sun burnt.” Now this is what we were talking about yesterday about akela and
those running the Cubs not putting sun cream on Cubs and Scouts but it’s okay
if the kids are actually burnt because then they’re a patient. “If it was my
kid” says Abby “I would rather know they were covered in sun cream and safe
than being at risk from cancer because they’re worried about being accused of
abuse.” There we are, political correctness. Another one here from Bob Lawe
from the Methodist Church District Communications office in Hull. He says “re
your story about the Scouts and the application of s!
un cream, I don’t know whether you’re aware but the same rule applies in
schools. Both my wife and daughter have worked in schools where they were
expressly banned from applying sun cream on any child, especially on a lunch
time. The child was supposed to apply it themselves which when a child is
disabled is nigh on impossible. The community wonders why there are less
voluntary sector youth clubs or activities for youngsters. The case of
legislation involved with child abuse and the risk that someone working in the
voluntary sector can very easily be accused of child abuse has put hundreds off
taking up these voluntary positions. We had to close a youth club recently
which had over 70 youngsters between the ages of five and 13 when the existing
leaders decided to retire after many years of dedicated work because no-one
would take the risk under the legislation and take on the responsibility unless
they were paid for the work.” That’s very sad isn’t it? And thanks very much !
Bob Lawe. Just a couple more emails here, Des Lynam is the nex!
 t one. D
es not wanting to come to Yorkshire anymore once a month to do Countdown has
prompted loads of emails. Just one final one on the subject from Tom Grove. “On
the subject of Des Lynam getting Countdown moved to London for his convenience.
I think it’s a disgrace. He knew where the programme was made before he took
the job on. Incidentally I’m a fan of his but he should remember but for a
tragedy he would not have the job at all, also he should remember no man is
bigger that the whole and he should think of the other members of the team who
will either have to up sticks and move or lose their jobs.” Tom, thank you very
much indeed. Don’t forget if you want to email in on something you’ve read in
the Levy Letter then do so to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bread

Bread prices are to rise. The price of bread is to rise because of poor
harvests and high energy bills so say the bakers. They say shoppers will soon
have to pay between 2p and 4p more for a loaf. Britain’s leading miller is
increasing its flour prices by an average of £29 per tonne from next month.
Their nearest rival which owns nine mills is pushing its flour prices up by
£28.75 per tonne from September 11th. So there we are, the price of bread is to
rise.

Millionaires

Last night on the programme we were talking to a millionaire from Grimsby who
won £7 million on the Lottery five years ago. He’s got a very posh house with
his own lake. We saw him fishing in the lake last night. He’s got a swimming
pool and tiled at the bottom of the swimming pool are the winning numbers that
he won the Lottery with and even though he’s got all that money he still does
the Lottery! The number of millionaires in Britain, as I hinted last night is
likely to hit 1.7 million by the year 2020 and more than half of them will be
women. The four-fold increase will be caused by buoyant property and share
prices when the value of the housing market is expected to rise by 71% over the
next 15 years. If you’ve got any money, stick it into property because the
chances are that will make you a millionaire. Women will get the extra benefit
from all of this, eventually making up 53% of all millionaires. Their fortunes
will be boosted by a longer life span and more generous!
divorce settlements! according to a study. So there we are, a lot more
millionaires in another 15 years’ time and most of them will be women.

Beautiful people

Well they had a list of natural beauties, who are they? Well Number 1 is Sophia
Loren, Number 2 is George Clooney and Number 3 is the 20 year-old opera singer
turned pop star Charlotte Church. They are the most beautiful people in the
country according to this survey. Catherine Zeta Jones was fourth and also in
there was Johnny Depp. Kate Winslet and Gwyneth Paltrow made it into the top
ten as did TV presenter Gail Porter. So there we are, they are some of the most
beautiful people. Charlotte Church has done amazingly well hasn’t she? So has
Sophia Loren. She’s actually 71 now and they’re pointing out there’s a great
similarity between Sophia Loren and Charlotte Church as both look very similar
or at least they did when Sophia was Charlotte’s age.

Emails

Don’t forget, if you want to drop me a line it’s [EMAIL PROTECTED] Just a
couple of other quick things here. Last week the Stickney Ladies Group had a
tour around Boston Fire Station and there is no pole, only the stairs for
firemen to use. “We were told that it’s due to health and safety rules. What a
silly idea. It puts more seconds onto response times.” Well as you know they’ve
just built a new fire station in Devon where there are no poles only stairs for
firemen to go down because it is a health hazard going down the pole in case
you hurt yourself. Presumably you can’t hurt yourself running down the stairs
to get to a fire engine!

Well that’s it from me today. Enjoy your Tuesday afternoon. Join me tonight
BBC1 at 6.30pm and don’t forget to drop me a line and don’t forget if you’ve
got any problems that you would like us to tackle on Leave it to Levy, give me
the details and also give me your ‘phone number as well.

Take care, Peter.
