Hello, it’s Peter here and welcome to Friday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day is
going well and I hope you’ll be able to join me tonight for all the day’s news.
Paul will have the forecast for the weekend. And also on the programme tonight,
we'll have a special report on the Bridlington teacher accused of abusing his
position by forming relationships with his female pupils. We’ll have the latest
from the court case on that story.

And find out why B&Q is creating a parking row in Lincoln where you can end up
with a £125 fine for using their car park. So many of you have got in touch
with me about this one. You’re up in arms about this. So join me tonight to
find out the full story.

Also tonight, we'll be meeting the Lincolnshire pensioners, who are first time
house buyers at the age of eighty-four. There’s a lot in the papers about
rising house prices and first time buyers not being able to get onto the first
rung of the property ladder. Well, there’s still hope obviously!

Look North will be revealing tonight how sign language can help you communicate
with your baby even before he learns to walk. Plus we'll have exclusive
pictures of the American diving team investigating the eighteenth century
warship sunk off our East Coast. I'll be chatting to the daredevil, Graham
Boanas, to find out how he plans to walk under the Humber this weekend. And
find out why a Hull rugby player is setting tongues wagging in London's art
circles.

So, a very busy programme tonight. I hope you can join me on BBC One at half
past six.

Pictures

Last night, we were very grateful to people for sending in pictures almost as
soon as the tornado struck Southern Lincolnshire. Every time you see anything
where you are that you think we should see, then think of us first and send it
in to us. You can send me a still in the post or get in touch with me by
emailing me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] If we get the pictures fast enough, then we
can get them up on the TV straightaway. So think of us first. Email us in or
call me anytime to the reception at BBC Hull on 01482 323232.

And on a more general note, if you’ve got any pictures for the Big Screen of
nice views around the region, then let me take a look. Just a reminder of the
postal address to send me anything – Peter Levy, BBC Look North, Queen's Court,
Queen's Gardens, Hull, HU1 3RH. Or email me at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Weekend

There’s quite a few events still planned with it being August. Although as I
look out of the window, it’s hard to believe that it is August. But it is! A
very busy weekend with lots of things planned. I hope they go well and I hope
the weather is reasonable. I have a feeling that the forecast for the weekend
isn’t good. All the details though for the forecast will be from Paul at half
past six and of course there’ll be a little reminder about the weather from
Paul after the One Show at 7.25pm.

Film

As you know, they’re making a film at the moment and using Grimsby as a
backdrop for the film version of the book, Atonement. But a television film is
going to be made all about John Prescott’s affair. Apparently, it is an ideal
movie. It’s bound to be a disaster movie, albeit with a game of croquet in the
middle of it, so the experts are saying. John Prescott’s fall from grace is to
be made into a full and frank television drama, it’s been revealed. The Deputy
Prime Minister will be the subject of a no-holds barred drama about his affair
with his secretary, Tracey Temple. It’s a ninety minute film, entitled simply -
Prezza. He also came under some criticism when he was photographed playing
croquet in his grace and favour estate in Dorneywood, whilst supposedly running
the country. The controller of drama at ITV said that John Prescott’s story is
a very engaging way to take a look down the corridors of power and will offer
an innovative and entertaining look at the upstairs !
downstairs world of Westminster. I’m sure John Prescott might not agree with
those sentiments! Prezza the movie is on its way!

Smoking

If you are a smoker and you’re trying to give up at the moment, then I wish you
well. This is a fascinating story, which has come out this week. If it’s true,
then it’s an answer to a lot of people’s prayers. It’s a wonder pill that
appears to help smokers kick the habit. It could soon be on sale in this
country. It’s called Chantix and it works by mimicking the effects of nicotine
on the actual body. It’s already been approved by the drug licensing body in
the United States. It’s now being considered by European regulators and could
be launched in this country in just a few months. A study, published yesterday,
found that almost half of those people, who took this pill, managed to quit.
The trial suggests that it is twice as effective as another drug, which is the
gold standard anti-smoking drug at the moment called Zyban. Well, this one
could be on sale in this country within months if it gets the necessary
licence. This could be good news for smokers!

Emails

Thanks for the emails on a variety of subjects. One thing I mentioned just
briefly really as a throwaway comment a week or so back, was the business of
Countdown and Des Lynam. Emails are still coming in about that. There was a lot
of venom pointed towards Des and his decision that he no longer wants to travel
to Yorkshire once a month from London to film the programme. So they’re going
to move the programme down to London. There are still emails coming in about
that. People feel very strongly about it. Of course, the saddest thing is that
Richard Whiteley was such a proud and loyal Yorkshireman and was so proud that
Countdown came from Leeds. He would be horrified at this whole story going on
and would probably be horrified that his beloved Yorkshire Television company
are going to move the programme south. But anyway, Countdown will be moving to
the south of England to be filmed and still with Des Lynam as the host. We used
the Countdown music last night on the programme. !
So thanks to Countdown for permission for that. This was when we were talking
to our little twelve year old genius, who was called Terrance. He got his AS
level maths at the age of twelve. We set him a tough question last night and he
got it right. He’s an extraordinary talent. Well done to every one, who’s got
their results back. I hope they’re what you wanted!

Warning

This is an incredible story. This is Alan White and his wife, Janice, who had
been away for a weekend. They came back into the house and found devastation in
their front room. The furniture had been chewed, the curtains shredded, the
carpets had been ripped up and their window frames had been gnawed through. At
first they thought it was the work of a deranged burglar, or possibly a large
bird that had gone berserk, but then they spotted the culprit lying dead behind
the coffee table. It was a squirrel, which had fallen thirty feet down the
chimney! It had landed, scared and confused, in the living room fireplace. The
impact of its body had hurled soot and coal across the carpet before it began
exploring the room for an escape route. The squirrel finally decided it would
chew its way out through the window frames. Well, you can’t see the pictures in
the papers, but there was horrific damage done by this one tiny squirrel. And
this is all because it lost its footing and fell d!
own the chimney pot. I think there’s something like £10,000 worth of damage!
Just an extraordinary disaster for that family to come home to. So if you’ve
got grey squirrels living nearby, then you have been warned!

Well, that's it from me for today. Have a very good day. Join me tonight on BBC
One at 6.30pm and of course again for our news roundup after the One Show at
7.25pm.

Take care,

Peter
