Hello, it’s Peter here and welcome to Wednesday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day
is going well and that you’ll be able to join me tonight on BBC One at 6.30pm.
I’ll have all the day’s news, including the horrific story of a group of ponies
near Filey, which have been attacked and stabbed. I’ll have the full story on
that one.

Also tonight, we'll be live at Sincil Bank for Lincoln City's biggest game in
history. They face the five times European Champions, Liverpool and of course,
we wish them all the best for that all important match.

I'll have a special report on why a Boston mum is demanding better breast
feeding facilities in the region. And find out why parking in one Lincoln
superstore could land you with a fine that would cost more than parking in
London.

Plus we'll be going back in time to see how the Humberside Fire Service dealt
with big blazes in years gone by. And I'll have all the fun, fizz and fillies
from Ladies Day at the Beverley Races! And for all the ladies in their hats and
posh frocks, Paul will be here with the forecast tonight in the studio with me.
I hope you can join me then.

Letters

Thanks for all the letters and emails on a variety of subjects. There’s one
letter here from Hull and I’m not going to give out the name of the person
mentioned here. “I want to tell you a story that just goes to show that there
are plenty of good people out there. I went to watch Hull City play Barnsley
and was going on the 701 Park and Ride. After the match, I went to the West
Park entrance and got on the 701 bus to go home. It set off over the Anlaby
Road flyover, heading towards Hull City Centre, until it came to the traffic
lights just before Hull Royal Infirmary. The bus turned right and I said to a
young man, sitting next to me – where is the bus going? And he said, Hessle. I
said, well I want to be in town, I live in Longhill Estate. And the young man
said, well don’t worry, my car is in Hessle, I don’t mind running you back into
town. I said that I couldn’t expect him to do that for me. But he said he would
with his wife and he took me there all the way from Hessle !
to the Longhill Estate. That meant a lot to me and it just goes to show that
there are a lot of good people around. I’m not the youngest of men. I’m
seventy-eight years old and these young people were showing me that goodwill is
still alive.” So there you are. What a lovely letter from Mr Barnes to an
unnamed person, and well done to them.

Diet

I see the diet has emerged with the claims that you can lose up to a stone in
ten days by drinking maple syrup. This has become one of the UK’s weight loss
crazes. Health shops have reported a huge surge in sales of Madal Bal natural
tree syrup over the summer after fashion magazines reported on its popularity
in Europe. The syrup is made from sap from maple and palm trees and costs
£39.99 a litre. Dieters mix it with water and lemon juice and cayenne pepper
and drink it instead of eating meals! It’s very popular, apparently, amongst
women in their twenties. I’m sure it’s not good for you. So that’s the maple
syrup diet and that’s the latest craze.

4x4

I see that sales of 4x4 off-road vehicles have dipped for the first time in
history, according to figures just out. The dip in sales has followed threats
from politicians to introduce huge tax hikes on owners of 4x4, which have been
dubbed the Chelsea tractors. Sales have been constantly rising, but this has
been the first time there has been a dip!

Veg

Generations of children have been told to eat up their carrots, because they’ve
been told it will help them see in the dark. But now it seems that sweetcorn
and broccoli might also be good for the sight. Scientists have found that
brightly coloured yellow and green vegetables contain chemicals, which can help
to protect the eyes from damage in later life. Women, under the age of
seventy-five, who ate lots of vegetables, such as peas, broccoli, squash and
sweetcorn, had lower rates of age-related macular degeneration.

Pictures

Don’t forget if you’ve got any pictures of any films that you think I should
see, then drop me a line. Also, if you’ve got a problem that you think I could
help with on the programme on Leave it to Levy, then get in touch. The address
is [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Blog

The latest star of the Internet is a grumpy old man called Peter! He doesn’t
give his surname, but he writes a daily blog on the Internet. He talks about
all his moans and groans, about what he’s not happy with in his life. Peter
lives by himself, apparently, in the centre of England. And no it isn’t me,
before you say anything!

University

Higher university tuition fees will drive up the cost of a degree to £33,000.
The first students to be hit with the top up charges face paying up to a fifth
more for a three year course. A new fee regime, coming into force next month,
will also push up student debts. The average cost of a degree will then cost
£33,500! If you’re a student reading the Levy Letter, then get in touch with
me. What do you think about the top-up charges? Are you in debt? I expect you
are, but by how much? Also, is there anyone reading the Letter, who wants to go
to University, but can’t afford it? Get in touch. I want to hear your story.
Email me at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Well, that’s it from me for today. Join me tonight on BBC One at 6.30pm. And
don’t forget, if there's someone you know, who’s not receiving a Levy Letter,
then point them in the direction of either one of the two addresses at the
bottom of the page, click on Levy Letter, and sign up. They’ll then get their
first daily email from me the following day.

See you tonight at six thirty and of course, again for your news roundup after
the One Show at twenty-five past seven.

Take care,

Peter
