Hello, it’s Peter here and welcome to Thursday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day
is going well and I hope you’ll be able to join me tonight on BBC One at
6.30pm. I’ll have all the day’s news and Paul will have the forecast. Also on
the programme, we'll have the latest on the flooding in Goole and we’ll be live
in the town after the heavy storms last night. And as Lincolnshire prepares to
commemorate the crews of bomber command, we'll find out what it was like on
board a Lancaster bomber. More on that later.

Also tonight, we'll meet the identical twin motorcyclists, as they prepare for
racing at Cadwell this weekend. Plus we'll be with the single mum from
Lincolnshire, who's gone back to school and will have received her GCSE results
today. And I'll be chatting to Theatre Director, Barrie Rutter from Hessle,
about his new play, which opens this week. All that on the programme tonight.

And just a reminder that tomorrow the programme will be coming live from the
seaside. We’ll be on the beach at Chapel St Leonards. If you can make it there
on Friday night, then get there round about six o’clock and join us for an hour
on the beach. On the programme tonight with Paul’s forecast, we’ll find out
just how wet or dry we’re going to be. Although, I don’t think it’s going to be
that bad hopefully. Fingers crossed for good weather for us! So we’ll be live
from Chapel St Leonards on the beach on Friday night between six thirty and
seven o’clock.

Thank you very much indeed for all the emails on a variety of subjects. On the
subject of post, I’ve had so much response. I could actually fill the whole
letter with your comments on the new post pricing. But just one here from Wendy
Nichols – “I’ve just posted a small package today. Under the new postal rate,
it cost me £1.27 by first class post. But last week, if I’d posted the same
small package, it would have cost me just 68p. That’s at first class as well.
This new pricing rate is just a con to put up the cost of postage. It seems
like a back door way for price increases by the post office. They do not
deserve people to send mail by them. This is a disgusting price rise for such a
small packet. Anyway, Peter, what was wrong with the old system? It worked
quite well for a long while and everyone knew what the cost was. Now people
will be wary as to what size of package they’re sending, because of the awful
price rise in postage.” Wendy – thank you very much indeed. And !
the best story that somebody in the Open Centre told me about was an envelope
they had to post, which they do every week. It’s fairly light, but a bit large
in inches and if he cut it into two and sent two pieces, rather than one big
package, then it would be cheaper than if he sent it as one large package. Even
though the post office then has to carry two bits of post. He didn’t think it
made any sense at all. Thank you for your views on post and I’m sure you’ll
keep them coming in.

Dating

Research into the preferences of singletons has found that the amount of money
that a potential date earns is important to 84% of men, compared to just 60% of
women. So how much a woman earns is very important to a man, but is not
important to a woman. The survey also found that 63% of men would be happy to
stay at home and relax whilst their partners went out to work. Just 63%? I
thought that would be a lot higher. But unfortunately for those British men,
who want to put their feet up, only 6% of women said they were prepared to
support both themselves and their partner. Despite their desire to find a rich
woman, 82% of men said they would splash the cash around on a date to impress
the opposite sex. That’s compared to just 18% of women, who would do the same.
And while 87% of people questioned in the survey said that they would never lie
about their salary to impress, 74% believed that other people exaggerated their
earnings to new dates. It’s funny this obsession in this !
country with other people’s money. But those percentages are quite staggering
aren’t they? 84% of men are bothered about how much a woman earns, but women
really aren’t that bothered about what a man earns. Only 16% said that they
were bothered about how much the man earns.

Emails

Don’t forget, if you’ve got a picture that you think I’d like to see or a story
that you think we could investigate, then give me the details. Send it in to me
and of course, it’ll come straight to me direct, no one else will see it, to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] And if you’ve got a problem for Leave it to Levy, then send
me the details and include a contact telephone number as well, because that
will be useful for us if we need to get in touch with you.

Well, someone has got in touch with me with a little problem! Can you help? Let
me know. This is rather an usual one and I don’t want any jokes about being a
matchmaker! But someone is looking for a husband for their pet dog. Can you
believe this? They have a yellow Labrador and apparently this is a very
pampered pooch and they’re very fussy about the type of dog they find. So do
you have a gentleman dog, a yellow Labrador, who is pampered too? Well, perhaps
they could be a perfect match and have a lovely litter of pampered puppies. So
if you can help, get in touch! Email me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] and of course let
me have your telephone number as well! I can’t believe I’m matchmaking for two
dogs!!

I started the week by talking about coffee and I read now that a cup of coffee
is about to become an expensive treat. A sharp rise in the cost of coffee beans
is now trading at a seven year high and that means coffee could now soar by 5p
a jar. Shoppers were warned about this last night. The actual sale of beans and
their prices has rocketed by 50% in a year and rose another 6.5% just yesterday
alone. The big increases have been caused by dwindling local supplies and lower
exports from Vietnam where heavy rain has disrupted operations there. So watch
out, there’ll be another 5p on a jar of coffee. And as if that’s not bad
enough, you know how expensive coffee is today in a shop, so heaven knows what
price it’ll go up to shortly.

Carrots

Just a reminder about a wonderful show that’s going to be at Hull New Theatre
on Friday 8th September and Saturday 9th. It’s all about the life of Dr Thomas
Barnardo and his children’s charity and is performed by eighty local
youngsters, who have given up their summer holidays to rehearse this great
show. There’s wonderful music and they’re very talented kids. Perhaps there are
some of the stars of the future in there! We had two of the actors on the
programme not long ago and I hope you’ll be able to go and see the show.
Tickets are on sale now from the box office and all the profits from the show
will be going to Children In Need. So it’s a great show and a wonderful cause.
If you want more information or if you want to buy tickets then get in touch
with the Hull box office on 01482 226655.

Crimewatch

It’s great to see last night the new programme – Crimewatch Solves. This was
the insight into how viewers’ calls have contributed to cracking a huge number
of cases, including a serial rapist, who was first questioned on the day he was
being interviewed for a prison governor’s job. There were some amazing success
stories from the programme that seems to be running for years and years. Last
night, they had some of the success stories and those of us, who are old
enough, can remember the cases first time around. Do you remember Police Five?
It was presented by somebody called Shaw Taylor. It used to be about five
minutes long and that was the forerunner for Crimewatch. That was years ago and
I suppose not many people will remember Police Five.

Talking of television, there was a comedy double bill on last night. It wasn’t
very well advertised, but between seven and eight they had two classic episodes
of BBC comedy. Both of which were written by the comedy legend talent of David
Croft and Jimmy Perry. They showed Dad’s Army and an episode of Hi-De-Hi on BBC
Two. If you missed it, then it was a really good curtain raiser to our
programme, which will be celebrating caravan parks and holiday camps on our
East Coast. That will be on Look North as we come live from the beach at Chapel
St Leonards on Friday night.

Well that’s all from me for today. Join me tonight at half past six as usual!
See you later.

Peter
