Hello, it's Peter here. Welcome to Tuesday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day's
going well and your long weekend was good despite the awful weather. If you had
something organised or planned then I hope it went well. It’s such a shame that
the weather was so foul. We’ll be reflecting that of course on tonight’s
programme. It’s at the usual time of half past six on BBC One. Also tonight
we'll have an exclusive report looking at who picks up the bill for bird flu.
The threat from migrating birds means constant surveillance is needed but
should farmers or the government have to pay for that?

Also tonight, new figures out today show that half of us still use our mobile
phones when driving. We'll hear from an East Yorkshire man whose family was
devastated by an accident where a mobile phone could have been to blame.

And the Bank Holiday might have been a wash out but we'll have the latest in
the BBC’s Springwatch season looking at what you can do to get close to nature.

Paul will be here with the weather forecast as usual. I hope you can join me a
little bit later on.

Emails

Thanks for the emails on a variety of subjects. We had many on the subject of
the concert by The Who, loads of emails from happy people, and loads from
people who were unhappy as well. Several people are saying that they reckon
this is the end of music concerts at the KC, and maybe the bands that they’re
getting are the wrong type of bands for the stadium. Well what do you think? If
you have a view on that one then let me know as usual on [EMAIL PROTECTED]

There were also some emails on things for a good cause. If you’ve got something
that you’re involved in for charity and you’d like a little mention then drop
me a line and let me know and you might get a mention in the Levy Letter. A
quick mention here for the North Ferriby Open Gardens, 20 gardens are open on
Sunday the 17th June, it’s 11 – 4, the very best of luck to those involved in
the event. That’s 20 gardens open on Sunday the 17th June at North Ferriby. The
week after of course, down by the bridge, it’s the North Humber Half Marathon.
I’ll be there to start that off with Paul. I look forward to seeing you on
Sunday the 24th of June.

Burglary

Well in a survey that’s out today from an insurance company, Hull is the third
place in the country where you’re most at risk from being burgled. Leeds
residents are 63% and Hull people are 55% more likely to make a claim than the
average policy holder in the country. So there we are, Hull is third place in
those tables, which will no doubt be reflected in people’s premiums.

Cows

I thought this was an April Fool’s joke when I read it, but it isn’t April the
1st. Cows are being bred which are a dieters dream. They will be roaming the
fields, and they produce milk containing only good fats. They produce low fat
milk. They’ve been developed by scientists, and they could be grazing our
pastures by 2011. The New Zealand researchers identified a set of genes in
Cattle that gives them a natural ability to produce only low fat milk. So there
we are, cows producing low fat milk straight out of the udder. You couldn’t
make it up could you?

Dyslexia

Well according to a report out today, dyslexia is a social fig leaf used by
middle class parents who fear their children will be labelled as low achievers
according to a professor. That’s an extraordinary statement, isn’t it? Julian
Elliot, a leading educational psychologist at Durham University says he’s found
no evidence to identify dyslexia as a medical condition after 30 years of
research. “There’s a huge stigma attached to low intelligence”, he said.
“After years of working with parents I have seen how they don’t want their
children to be considered lazy, thick, or stupid, if they get called this
medically diagnosed term dyslexic, it is a signal to all that it is not to do
with intelligence.”
So there we are, a very controversial statement from Professor Julian Elliot,
dyslexia is just a middle class way of hiding stupidity. I’m sure you’ve got a
view on that one, send them to the usual address at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Style

Talking of style, when we can actually get to the beach, I was reading about
the things that men and women should avoid, the summer style crimes. Well the
worst ones for men are socks with sandals. Speedos are number two. Football
shirts are at three. Bum bags are four, they’re definitely out. String vests
are number five.
For the ladies, streaky fake tan is number one, crop tops with bulging fat,
oversized sunglasses are number three. Ill fitting bikinis are number four, and
grubby bra straps are number five. They are the top ten summer style crimes
that you can commit this year, once you do actually get to the beach.

programme is no exception. If you haven’t had a chance to look at our new

Pictures

Don’t forget if you’ve got a picture in this awful weather that you think we’d
like to show on the programme. Send it to me. Also if you’ve got a story that
you think we might be able to use on the programme or a problem that you think
we’ll be able to investigate, drop me a line to [EMAIL PROTECTED] I look
forward to hearing from you, enjoy your afternoon and join me tonight on BBC
One at half past six.
Bye for now

Peter
