Hello and welcome to today’s Levy Letter. I hope your day’s going well,
although it might not be if you’re a Hull City supporter. The Tigers lost to
Chelsea last night of course, it might not be a big surprise to many people –
I’m told the Chelsea team cost over £100 million more than Hull City’s team! So
if you’re a Hull City fan, commiserations today, but if you’re a neutral than
I’m sure you enjoyed seeing the Premiership superstars visiting our region.

Coming up on Look North today, we'll meet the 11 year old boy from East
Yorkshire who hasn't been to school for weeks because his parents claim that
teachers can't deal with his severe allergy to peanuts.

It might be almost a hundred days since the June floods but the VIP visits to
our region continue. After ministers galore, today it's the turn of the man
whose job it is to lead an independent review into what lessons need to be
learned. I’ll be speaking to him tonight.

Thousands of people have signed a petition calling on the Government to sign up
the Red Arrows for the London 2012 opening ceremony. They all believe the
government has banned them because they are too British... but is that true?
We'll be investigating.

We're always hearing that obesity is one of the biggest health issues facing us
now, but it seems we're passing the problem on to our dogs! Around a third of
all dogs are overweight and now a kennels in Lincolnshire has created its own
health club for canines. We’ll visit the doggy fat camp.

And we'll hear from Alan Titchmarsh about his new TV series the Nature of
Britain. Of course we’ll also have the weather forecast as usual, it’s not
looking that promising right now, but it’s been very changeable, so hopefully
we’ll get a few minutes of sun today. That’s all coming up tonight on BBC One
at half past six.

Box Office

Well as I said, it’s been a wet day today from where I’m sitting, and I think
we all agree it hasn’t been the brightest and driest of summers this year, but
there might be one group of people rejoicing over the wet weather. The wettest
summer on record has driven cinema box offices to their highest takings for 40
years. Some of the big films released this summer were the Harry Potter film,
Pirates of the Caribbean, The Simpsons Movie, Shrek the Third, and Spider-Man
3. All of them did exceptionally well out of our damp climate this year,
although it would be interesting to know how well DVD rentals and films on
television did. I know there were times when the weather made me not want to
leave my front door, let alone go to the cinema.

Balloon

Here’s an amazing story I read today, a balloon released into the sky by a
young girl at a fete in Manchester has been discovered in Southern China.
It’s baffled meteorologists, as helium balloons don’t typically travel very
far, but on this occasion it managed to go about 6,000 miles, that’s incredible
isn’t it? The balloon was sent back by a Chinese student with an enclosed note
saying he found it while he was playing with his friends. It’s something that a
lot of children do, and adults as well I suppose, releasing balloons into the
air with a note attached asking for a reply saying where it was found. I don’t
think many people will have beaten that journey of 6,000 miles. Maybe you have,
if so then drop me a note to my email address [EMAIL PROTECTED] It’ll go
directly to me, and if you want to let me know about anything to do with the
letter, or maybe a story for the programme or a picture you’d like us to see
then you can give it to me at that address as well.
It would be fantastic if somebody had a more incredible story than that balloon
journey to tell me, but somehow I doubt it.

Don’t forget to take a look at our Look North website, you can find it at
www.bbc.co.uk/looknorthhull. You can watch the most recent Look North
programme, and view some of our tops stories online if you’ve missed it. We get
a lot of comments from people watching the programme online abroad. Of course
you don’t need to live in our region to get the programme over the internet, so
if you’re going on holiday, or moving away and you can’t live without Look
North then there’s your answer!

That’s all from me today, have a good afternoon and join me tonight for the
programme at half past six on BBC One. Bye for now.

Peter
