Hello there and welcome to the start of another week! I’ll be with you for
tonight’s Look North as always. On the programme, we'll have the latest on the
tragic accident last night after a car carrying nine people, including seven
children, crashed into the River Witham. We’ll have the full story on that
tonight.

Plus we go behind the scenes for a report with custom officers as they try to
stop a flood of illegal cigarettes coming into the region. And with the Hull
and Humber clipper on its way in the first stage of the round the world yacht
race, we'll take a look at its progress and what this race could mean for the
economy of Hull and East Yorkshire.

It's a vital service for people with kidney disease, but it could be lost if
volunteers don't come forward. Find out tonight how you could help keep this
service going.

Our sports reporter, Damian Johnson, will be with us live as usual for a round
up of all the sports news from the weekend. And Look North will be in
Willoughby where the whole village has come together to stage a play about
their most famous son, Captain John Smith. That’s on BBC One at half past six.
I hope you can join me then.

Well, they say it’s the prerogative of the judges to change their minds, but it
certainly meant heartbreak for one singing hopeful from our region. I don’t
know if you saw the episode, but a local girl from Skegness sang for the X
Factor judges at the weekend and I thought she was pretty good! The judges
initially agreed too and put her through to the next round at Boot Camp. But as
soon as she’d left the room, the judges changed their mind and Simon Cowell had
to go outside to meet Katie Boothand and say sorry, but you can’t go. The
reason behind this had nothing to do with her voice or how well she sang, but
because she was five and a half months pregnant! So Simon did a quick
calculation and realised that she could give birth during the final shows!
Well, that would be a first wouldn’t it? So despite the fact that Katie had
sung her way into Boot Camp, the judges decided that she shouldn’t go through
because she was five and a half months pregnant!

And you know that I’m not really all that keen on going to the gym or going for
a jog or anything like that. But perhaps I should get my trainers out of the
wardrobe as apparently most UK adults are so unwilling to do exercise that not
even the threat of an early death is enough to get them off the sofa. Does this
sound familiar with you? Only 38% of people said they’d do some exercise if
their life depended on it. The British Heart Foundation are the people looking
into this research and they say only a third of people manage to do enough
exercise to achieve just the minimum recommended amount. I’m sure I must be
included in that statistic! The aims are for us to do at least thirty minutes
of exercise five times a week to raise our heart rate and that will help us
keep healthy.

Last week was the funeral of the fundraiser, Jane Tomlinson, who died after her
long battle with cancer. Although Jane wasn’t from our region, the tributes are
still coming in, which shows just what an amazing woman she was and how many
people she touched with her charity work. Here’s an email from Richard and his
family, who write – “Jane was an inspiration for future sporting stars whether
in road cycling or road running and her charity work was tremendous for people
of Yorkshire and beyond. Please give our deepest sympathy to Mike and his
family.” So people’s thoughts are still with the family of Jane Tomlinson at
this difficult time. We wish them well of course.

Well, that's it from me for today. Keep emailing me throughout the week. I’d
love to know what you’re up to at the moment. I see that lots of emails have
come in with pictures from the region. We’ll be showing some of those in the
programme I’m sure. Lots of pictures have come in of the QE2, thanks for those.
