Hello and welcome to the Levy Letter for Wednesday. I hope you’re having a good
day and you can join me tonight for Look North at half past six on BBC one as
usual. Tonight on the programme, controversial plans for a major incinerator in
Saltend go before the local council today, but what will it mean for the
region's recycling plans? We’ll try to find out.

We'll also have the latest on the brutal murder of Cottingham man Stephen
Callaghan as one of the defendants takes the stand today.

We’ll meet farmers in our region who say their farms and livelihoods are on the
line as blue tongue restrictions continue to squeeze local producers.

We'll have a special report on conservationist's fears that new flood defence
plans could damage chalk rivers, and affect the habitat of wild otters.

And we meet the traditional Japanese dance group coming to Hull to perform a
special ceremony usually reserved for the eyes of Emperors. That sounds
interesting, I’m looking forward to seeing that.

And of course we’ll have the weather forecast as always, that’s coming up at
half past six on BBC One.

Thank you for all the big response we had on the postal strikes yesterday. We
had loads of messages with people telling their stories about how they’ve been
affected. Well today it’s getting back to normal as postal workers around the
country start delivering again. I hope you’ve managed to get through it without
too much difficulty.

Exercise

You might be one of those people who heard or read advice lately to get 30
minutes of “moderate” exercise on most days of the week, and you might have
interpreted that as walking, doing housework, or any active activity. Well even
if you follow this to the letter you might not be doing enough.
This is one of those subjects that’s so confusing because there’s always
different things in the news, and different advice about how much you should
do. Well it seems that unfortunately there is no real substitute for vigorous
exercise. So all those of us who’ve been feeling smug and satisfied about
walking to the shops or the office a few days a week will have to break into a
brisk jog to get the most benefits from physical activity and reduce the risk
of heart disease.
So what’s the definition of “vigorous activity”? Well it’s activity that makes
it difficult to speak in complete sentences, but that can still be maintained
continuously for several minutes. So cleaning the car or srubbing the bath
might not be enough. If you’re hoping to get the best benefits from exercise
then it might be time to trade in the walking shoes for a pair or running ones.
I don’t know why they didn’t just say that in the first place.

Mother Moose

I had a story in the letter yesterday about how people in Africa are using bees
to frighten elephants away from their farms, and today I’ve got another story
of conflict between natural enemies in the animal kingdom. Scientists in the US
have discovered that pregnant Moose in the country’s Yellowstone Park move
closer to human developments like roads and buildings in order to avoid the
threat of bears. Apparently this isn’t the only example of animals using humans
as protection, other species including monkeys, deer and elephants also take
cover near populated areas to evade predators.
It’s bizarre isn’t it? But some animals actually use us as cover against more
people shy predators.

Well that’s nearly if from me today, but if you’ve got something you’d like to
mention in the letter, a story or a comment you’d like to tell me, or a picture
for the programme then as always you can contact me on [EMAIL PROTECTED] Drop
me a line and I’ll get your message directly.

Have a good day and remember to watch the programme at half past six on BBC
One. Join me later.

Bye for now.

Peter
