Hello and welcome to todays Levy Letter for Thursday. I hope youre enjoying the sunshine were having at the moment, weve had some glorious days. Coming up on Look North tonight at half past six on BBC One, as the hot weather continues, emergency services are pleading with youngsters not to swim in dangerous areas after the death of a boy in Scunthorpe swimming in a gravel pit with friends.
There's a row breaking out between walkers and land owners. As new legislation opens up the coast to everyone, some land owners fear they'll end up being sued for ramblers' injuries. A woman from Hull is demanding answers from the makers of Ready Brek after she found pieces of glass in her six month old daughter's breakfast. Well have the full story. It's cost millions of pounds, taken a year longer than expected, and today we'll finally get to see the refurbished Bridlington Spa. But is it the jewel in the crown of the East Coast? And we'll have all the pomp and colour as the Grenadier Guards are granted the Freedom of the City of Lincoln. Thats all coming up at the usual time of half past six on BBC One. And Lisa will be here again with the weather forecast, lets hope its more of the same. With the days getting longer and the temperature getting warmer Im sure all the photographers in our part of the world will be finding some excellent subjects for pictures. If youve got any unusual or different pictures you think we should show on the programme, or if you take any photographs of our region youre particularly proud on then send them to me by email at [EMAIL PROTECTED] You can also send a hard copy in the post to me at the BBC in Hull. I look forward to seeing what you come up with. Dont forget if youve got anything you think I should know about for the programme, or anything for the letter then you can get in touch at the same address and itll go directly to me. Food This is one of those stories that you read in the news and can hardly believe, but according to a new study, £9 billion of avoidable food waste is thrown away in England and Wales every year. Thats 3.6 million tonnes, most commonly made up of salad, fruit, and bread. Another staggering statistic is that 60% of all food thrown away is untouched. It reminds me of what you always got told by your parents, that you should eat your food because people were starving in other countries. It is shocking to think of how much we just throw away. The study suggests £1 billion of food is thrown away while still being in date, and the average UK household throws away 18% of all food purchased. If youre guilty of buying yoghurts and not eating them, its estimated that 1.3 million unopened yoghurts are thrown away each day. As I said, its hard to believe. So next time youre considering buying something youre not sure youll eat, you might think about leaving it on the supermarket shelf. Blacklisted People whove ever left a job under a black cloud could soon find it much more difficult to find employment if plans for a national shared database get off the ground next month. The National Staff Dismissal Register already has some of the UKs biggest companies signed up to the scheme and by the end of May they will be able to check whether candidates for jobs have faced allegations of stealing, forgery, fraud, damaging company property or causing a loss to their employers and suppliers. I suppose how you feel about this will depend on whether youve ever been dismissed from work for one of those. Some people are also worried that the system could lead to people being shut out of the jobs market if theyve been falsely accused by an employer, or if unfounded accusations have been made against them. But one things for sure, if youve got a black spot on your CV or something you try to hide on your job history, it could be coming back to haunt you. For some, that will be a frightening thought. Well thats it from me for today, I hope you can join me for Look North tonight at half past six on BBC One. Have a very good day and if the suns shining where you are I hope you make the best of it.
