Hello and welcome to today’s Levy Letter for Friday. It’s the end of another
week, and we’ve had some sunshine to enjoy. I hope you’ve managed to get
outside and soak some of it up, and let’s hope for some more to come. Coming up
on Look North tonight at half past six on BBC One we have a report on how a
suspicious fire on the Bransholme estate in Hull is raising suspicions about
some other council properties.

Find out how school children are being taught water safety days after a young
boy drowned in a Scunthorpe lake.

As the credit crunch and mortgage crisis hit Lincolnshire, we'll look at how
difficult it is to get on the property ladder. If you’ve had similar problems
then don’t hesitate to get in touch with us and let us know about your
experiences. You can email in as always to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

We'll be finding out why landowners are up in arms over calls to open up the
coastline to ramblers.

We'll hear from the police after thousands of pounds were dumped in Lincoln
city centre.

We'll also be following the big match build up to Hull City's play off-game
with Watford, and of course wishing them well.

And Lisa will be here with the detailed forecast for the weekend. Don’t miss
that and all the rest of the day’s news and stories at half past six on BBC One.

Well I was writing yesterday about food wastage, and Tony D emailed in to say

“In some of the bigger supermarkets they are offering pots of a well known
dessert at 54p each or FIVE for £1.00. Common sense tells you to buy 5 for
£1.00, and even if you throw 3 away you are still saving 8p on the deal.”

Well it’s no surprise lots of us buy too much of something sometimes. I think
we’ve all been guilty of that at some point but if we think of the waste it
causes perhaps we’ll cut down and help the environment in the process. Thank
you Tony for that email.

Seasonal

Well I don’t think you’ll be surprised to hear that celebrity chef Gordon
Ramsay has been speaking his mind again. The language in the report I read was
surprisingly clean for Gordon – that’s what editors are for – but the message
was typically uncompromising. Gordon says that British restaurants should be
fined for using imported, out of season fruit and veg. He says fresh produce
should be sourced locally and only available when they’re in season.
I wonder what you think about this. His argument is that it would inspire chefs
to become less lazy, and reduce pollution by cutting down on food flown in to
the country. I suppose it would mean no more strawberries on the menu in
January.
Ramsay also launched an attack on fellow TV chef Delia Smith. Now I know that
there was a bit of controversy when she recently started using canned and ready
made ingredients in her recipes, and Gordon called it “an insult”. Strong words
there. If you’ve got anything to say on that, let me know. It seems like Gordon
has an opinion on pretty much everything!

Hiccups

If you watch the programme regularly you’ll have seen this story a while back
on Look North, and now 24 year old Chris Sands from Lincoln could be close to
curing the hiccups that have plagued him for 15 months. We spoke to Chris on
the programme, and as a last resort, he’s considering turning to key-hole
surgery. Chris believes his chronic condition might be caused by a damaged
valve in his stomach, and the surgery could hold the key.
In his search for a cure, Chris has tried 100 different ways of drinking water,
hypnosis, and even yoga, but nothing has helped.
It’s incredible that something like hiccups can go on for so long, but the
longest recorded case was a man in Iowa in America who suffered from hiccups
between 1922 and 1990, a total of 68 years. That’s frightening. Good luck to
Chris and let’s hope he finds a cure.

Don’t forget if you have anything you want us to know about, anything for the
programme or an interesting picture to show before the weather, you can reach
us at [EMAIL PROTECTED] And if you know anybody who’s not signed up to the Levy
Letter and you think they’d like one, send them along to
www.bbc.co.uk/looknorthhull then click on Levy Letter, and they can sign up.

Well that’s it from me for this week. I hope you’ll join me tonight at half
past six on BBC One for Look North. Have a very good weekend, take care.

Bye for now

Peter
