There are two paper-based exams to pass as well :^)
The advantages of computer-based exams are, roughly:
- There is very probably a Prometric or VUE test centre very near to where
you live.
- You get to pick (within reason) when to sit the exam.
- It is likely that you will have the exam room to yourself during the
exam.
- You find out immediately after the exam whether you passed or not.
- The computer-based exam is more convenient to take.
On the other hand, while paper-based exams are cheaper, you have to note that:
- Generally you have to travel to where the exam is held. Depending on
where you live, the cost of travel, accommodation etc. can eat up much
of what you save on the cost of the exam itself.
- They are available only every so often.
- You will sit in a room with a whole bunch of other candidates, possibly
with a trade fair going on around you.
- You will have to wait some time (weeks) before you find out about the
results.
Some of these disadvantages don't apply to paper exams that are held under the
auspices of the LPI-AAP program, where LPI arranges for a »proctor« to come
to the partner's location to deliver the exams, but for people within
industry or on their own I would recommend taking a very close look at the
Prometric/VUE offerings available locally, as they may not appear *that*
expensive in comparison, once all the factors are considered.
