Guys, you'll have to come up with something a lot more substantial in the way
of an argument for "hands on" testing to replace what LPI is currently doing
than IMHO arguments.

"I have a cunning plan."

I actually had a demo of a hands-on test framework at the UN/WSIS event in
Geneva back in 2003. It relied on UML and a java applet ssh client running
in a browser. It proved that it could be done.
Actually, with a large enough proctor network (and LPI is growing one just so
that we can provide paper versions of the exams to places where there are no
test centres and special events), LPI could do hands-on exams. LPI isn't in
the position to do it today, though. The cost of implementation and the size
of the proctor network that would need to be created is too much right now.
However, I think that LPI's current strategy of bring in more "for profit"
partners (training companies, sub-affiliates, ...) could help grow that
proctor network much more quickly.

I don't think that we'd have to pick a distro. With most of the scenario
based hands on questions, the distro would play little part in affecting the
answers. It would add a little to the cost of developing the exams but not
significantly.
