I think your printcap may be an issue here:
:ifhp=dev=lwtest.printers.math.umd.edu%9100,model=hp8100,appsocket
Why do you have appsocket enabled here? Try removing that option and see
if it works better. Most HP printers don't do a standard appsocket
interface; other brands use it quite a bit, though (Xerox comes to mind,
but there are others).
